Pressure washing a car: how to do it step by step

Grit scratches paint, so pressure washing a car is about getting the grit off before anything touches the panel. Do it in this order: rinse from the wheels up with a 15 degree or wider nozzle at least 30 cm from the paint, foam and let it dwell, wash by hand from the roof down, rinse again, then dry before the water spots. Never fit a narrower nozzle to speed it up.

What you need

• A pressure washer with a 25 or 40 degree nozzle.
• A foam cannon and Foam Wash 1L Premium Car Wash Concentrate.
• Two buckets, a soft microfibre wash cloth and a second cloth for the lower panels.
• A soft wheel brush and a wheel cleaner.
• A plush microfibre drying towel or a blower.

Step 1: Park in the shade and check the nozzle

Park in the shade and let the panels cool. Tesla's Australian Model Y Owner's Manual | Tesla tells owners not to wash in direct sunlight. Fit the 25 or 40 degree nozzle. Step 2: Rinse from the wheels up, then the roof down

Rinse the wheel arches, sills and lower doors first, where the heavy dirt sits, then start at the roof and work down so loose grit runs off the car instead of across it. Tesla's manual has owners flush grime and grit off before washing. Keep the nozzle moving and at least 30 cm from the paint. Step 3: Foam the car and let it work in

Cover the car in foam from the bottom up, so the lower panels that carry the most dirt soak longest. Foam Wash is pH neutral and designed to be safe on vehicle coatings and paint, and it produces a thick, lubricating foam that lifts dirt so it drips away instead of being dragged across the paint. Let the foam work until it begins to run, then rinse it off with the same wide nozzle at the same distance. Mazda's manual says not to let soap dry on the finish.

Step 4: Wash by hand from the roof down

Fill one bucket with wash solution and the second with plain water. Wash a panel with the cloth in straight passes, then rinse the cloth in the plain-water bucket before it goes back into the solution, so the grit you have just lifted stays in the bucket. Tesla's manual specifies a clean soft cloth, cold or lukewarm water and a mild car shampoo, and rules out rough cloths and washing mitts; Mazda's says no nylon cloth, and to rub gently. Do the roof, glass, bonnet and upper doors first, then change to the second cloth for the sills, lower doors, bumpers and wheel arches.

Step 5: Clean the wheels and tyres last

Spray wheel cleaner on one wheel at a time, work it through the spokes with the brush, and rinse across the face of the wheel with the wide nozzle. Keep the wheel brush and its bucket away from the paint.

Step 6: Rinse the whole car again

Rinse from the roof down until no foam runs from the panel gaps, mirror housings or badges. Tesla's manual has owners rinse with clean water after washing so soap does not dry on the surfaces. Hold the wide nozzle at 30 cm and let the water sheet down each panel.

Step 7: Dry the car before the water spots

Dry the car before the water evaporates, roof down, with a blower, a plush microfibre drying towel or both. A towel dragged over a panel that still carries grit scratches it, which is why the rinse in step 6 comes first. What never gets the jet

No quick-connect nozzle under 15 degrees on a vehicle, per BLAHST's FAQ. The turbo nozzle is a rotating zero degree tip for concrete and paths, and it never goes near paint. A pressure washer never points at people, animals, electrical fittings, the engine bay or a charge port, and is never used from a ladder. Tesla adds no hot water, and no water aimed at window, door or bonnet seals.
